Day #1, Monday, June 26, 2017

Welcome to Vacationland!  Make your way north to Rockland, the Lobster Capital of the World in mid-coast Maine. Lunch on your own in Rockland where you’ll see the Rockland harbor lighthouse from the new waterfront park with a boardwalk.  Then sit back and relax for your driver along the coast “downeast” to Bar Harbor.  You'll see quiet little protected harbors filled with working lobster boats along the way.  Ospreys and bald eagles nest high in the spruces along the rugged shores, deer browse the open fields, moose forage the wetlands and harbor seals make their annual pilgrimage to quiet coves.  The pretty pink and purple lupine flowers will be in bloom in late June along the way.  Check in to your hotel in Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor or Ellsworth for three nights with dinner is included at or near the hotel.  Dinner is included this evening at a restaurant overlooking the ocean.

Day #2, Tuesday, June 27, 2017

A deluxe continental breakfast is included at the hotel this morning. Bar Harbor has been celebrated for its breathtaking beauty ever since the island was discovered in 1604 by Samuel de Champlain, who named it "Isle de Monts Desert" (Mt. Desert Island) for its bare, desert-like mountaintops.  This morning, enjoy a one hour horse-drawn carriage ride along the park carriage roads built by John D. Rockefeller Jr.  You’ll travel through some of Acadia’s off-the-beaten-track scenic areas. Meet your local guide for a tour of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Here in the first national park founded east of the Mississippi, you’ll see 9 mountains over 1000 feet high, stone bridges, lakes, ponds, trails and carriage roads.  You will travel the entire Park Loop road with stops at Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole on Ocean Drive and Sieur De Mont Springs Wild Gardens of Acadia, plus learn about the rich and famous visitors who built summer cottages in Bar Harbor.  Free time for lunch on your own in Bar Harbor and some time to explore the shops, boutiques and galleries in downtown Bar Harbor.  There are also two parks and a shoreline walking trail here. This afternoon, tour the Bar Harbor Oceanarium, hear a talk about lobster fishing about lobster fishing at the Maine Lobster Museum there, and see how baby lobsters are raised in the Maine Lobster Hatchery.  Don your souvenir Maine Lobster Hat for a traditional Maine lobsterbake dinner with all the fixin’s.  Alternate menus are steak and haddock.

Day #3, Wednesday, June 28, 2017

Enjoy a deluxe continental breakfast included at the hotel.  This morning you’ll take a sightseeing / nature cruise of Frenchman’s Bay.  Cruise along the calm waters of the harbor and see a variety of marine life on this narrated excursion.  You'll head to a small island to look at harbor seals basking on the rocks and enjoy the majestic scenery of the Maine coast.  The afternoon is free for exploring Bar Harbor at your own pace. There are many restaurants, cafes and boutiques for shopping and lunch on your own. The Abbe Museum (Maine Native American History) and Bar Harbor Historical Society are located in town (admission not included) and there is a wonderful shoreline walking path as well.    Another lobster choice dinner is included at a local restaurant with several entrée selections.

In 1832, February the New York State Agricultural Society was founded in Albany by a group of farmers, legislators, and others to promote agricultural improvement and local fairs.

1841 – The nation’s first state fair is held in Syracuse, New York. on September 29 & 30th. There an assembled 10,000-15,000 people heard speeches by notables and viewed animal exhibits, a plowing contest, and samples of manufactured goods for the farm and home.1842 – The second New York State Fair is held in Albany, and ushered in an era of growth and travel for the institution.

1842-1889 – The fair traveled among 11 different cities—Albany, Auburn, Buffalo, Elmira, New York City, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, Saratoga Springs, Syracuse, Utica, and Watertown.

1889 – Syracuse Land Co donated to the Agricultural Society a 100-acre tract of land in Geddes (Onondaga County) crossed by railways that facilitated exhibit transport. The project continued through September of 1890.

1890s – Burdened with debt from constructing permanent buildings on the site, the Agricultural Society turned to state government for relief. New York State purchased the grounds in 1899 and took over management of the fair the next year, creating the 11-member State Fair Commission appointed by the governor.

Eastern States Exposition, home of The Big E, has presented the finest livestock, the most innovative commercial, industrial and artistic developments, and the highest caliber of varied entertainment to the people of the Northeastern United States for more than eight decades. More than one million people now attend the 17 day Big E, an annual autumn extravaganza of entertainment, exhibits and agriculture – the culmination of a visionary idea first expressed by Joshua L. Brooks at the beginning of the 20th century. Brooks knew that farming in New England was on the decline and that production costs were soaring. His hope was to create an Exposition that would provide demonstrations of new farming methods and establish competitive awards which would inspire farmers and their children to produce more efficiently and sponsor cooperative purchasing that would lower the farmers’ costs. Above all, Brooks believed in developing and showcasing an agricultural New England.
